Sacred bird, the resplendent Quetzal
This bright beauty is often also known as the bird of freedom. And for good reason. After all, the resplendent Quetzal is the national symbol of Guatemala and the national symbol of freedom in this country. In her honor Guatemalans called the national monetary unit. The ancient Maya and the Aztecs considered this bird sacred — she embodied the God of air.
It lives from southern Mexico to Panama. Now resplendent Quetzal is on the verge of extinction and listed in the International Red book as endangered species.
